“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”
― The Cruel Prince
Synopsis :
Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.
And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.
To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.
As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
My Thoughts :
“If you hurt me, I wouldn't cry. I would hurt you back.”
It has been a while since I write any reviews here. I would like to apologize for the inactiveness. But don't worry, let's dive into my second review. Warning: spoilers and massive fangirling awaits.
THIS BOOK IS DA BOMB. This book shows how a mortal human girl wants to gain power in the faerie realm. I totally enjoyed reading this book and I like how this book progress from normal to WOW and how the relationship develops. (Spoiler from here) We can see how the relationship between Cardan and Jude develop from enemies to not-so-enemies. The tension between those two? no one gonna survives that. Honestly, I ship Jude with Locke so hard at first and even myself are in love with this handsome fairie. But as we all know my taste in man are a bit off kinda, and Locke is a total trash bag so a big NO. It was so frustrating reading this part, although I can totally expect the outcome of the relationship but I wish I was wrong. Never fall for any male book character that too good to be true XD Family loves and betrayal also one of the things that Holly Black highlight in this book. Like a lot of betrayals and trust me, it is all worth it.
“Nice things don’t happen in storybooks. Or when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it.”
I love how Holly Black shows the main character, Jude, develop from an obedient child to a woman that no one should cross. I mean the power moves she pulls at the end of the book is so UNEXPECTED, and I have to put down the book and take a really deep breath because yeah gurl. I love when Jude makes everyone thinks she just a little harmless mortal girl but then BOOM drop the bomb that no-uh I'm not harmless and cannot be charm what you gonna do bout' that fairie? I was like: That's it, I'm in love and not even Cardan can stop me. Never underestimate a girl, thank you very much. Moreover, this book does not really shows or teaches us to "do good and good thing will come to you", but more about " You get what you work for and stop waiting for the opportunity but create one instead" (I guess that is how I understand).
“I have lied and I have betrayed and I have triumphed. If only there was someone to congratulate me.”
I can say that it is really hard for me to put down this book. Reading this during finals week is not advisable too. This book left me hanging and can't wait to read the next book in the series (read: Wicked King). I think everyone should read this book cause this book is a total precious gem and overall, I rated this book 5 stars for all the feels and great stories! I'll do the second book review soon. Until then, bye bye and thank you for reading.
“You remind me that I am a mere mortal and you are a prince of Faerie. Well, let me remind you that means you have much to lose and I have nothing.”
